Cereal box art

As a kid I loved cereal (still do) but loved the boxes they came in even more. The bright colours of the boxes, the characters on the front, and more importantly what the free stuff inside was. Lucky Charms was a personal favourite for the brief time they were in the UK market (Anyone remember the free frisbies?).

So, its great to look through this pretty big archive of cereal box artwork. A lot of American stuff but still some great visuals.

PS how could we forget this one?...

Cartoon Canines

Top 5 Tuesday is here again and this week it's our top 5 cartoon dogs.

We're keeping it nice and simple, with only dogs that are cartoons permitted. So Gromit didn't make it because he's more model than cartoon, Sweep didn't either because, well, he's a hand puppet. And Santa's Little Helper didn't because there are no Simpsons clips on Youtube.

So from the top and in at Number 5;

5. Brian Griffin*

4. Dogtanian

3. Hongkong Phooey

2. Snoopy

1. Scooby Doo Original version

* Brian Griffin has the distinction of being the first 'thing' to appear on two separate occasions in our Top 5 Tuesday. He gets 2 clips as a prize (and also because they're pretty funny).

Previous Top 5 Tuesdays:
You only sing when you're winning
Dancefloor Divas
Whistlin' Dixie
Handlebars & Horseshoes
Brian & the Brians
Songs from 80s Soundtracks
Classic Sweets

Seascape

I went to see this interesting project by artist Susan Collins at the De La Warr Pavilion yesterday, a nice combination of the interweb and photography: "digital seascapes created by images captured from webcams overlooking the sea, sited at different locations along the south east coast of the UK. The webcams are sited in each location for a period of 6-12 months, recording at different rates over the course of the year... ..Each image is constructed from data collected from top to bottom and left to right in horizontal bands continuously, marking visible fluctuations in light and movement throughout the day and being archived at regular intervals. At any one time, the viewer experiences a different version of the image as the pixels change and the piece evolves"

Have a look at the project website here - you can follow the images updating live.

Great aerial photography from Stephan Zirwes.

Wooden type at Diesel

Over the weekend this sign was spotted at the Diesel store on Carnaby Street. Great to see wooden type being used in a contemporary way.

a nice idea every day

Oooh there's some very nice photography and all round creativeness to be seen over at a nice idea every day. Here's a few photos taken from some of their collections. Their tests, virals and animations are quite captivating too - deerhoof, coke zero and neonman are particularly super.

Sounds of the Arcade

Back in November 1982, on a rainy afternoon, two friends in New York started recording sounds from the arcade machines they were playing. Using a Sony Cassette Recorder they kept it up for 6 years. The tapes were forgotten about until the late 90s when 14 of the tapes were rediscovered.

Now all those recordings have been digitised and can be heard here. Over 20 hours of arcade machine nostalgia.
