Choose books.

Yes, today is Tuesday and this week we have remembered that it needs a Top 5.

We try to keep our readers on their toes and mix it up as much as possible and this week is no different. Here in Sell Towers we are big fans of books, and enjoy a good novel. So, this weeks Top5 Tuesday is 'Great Book Openings'.

"Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday night. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life . . . But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?"

Trainspotting - Irvine Welsh

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.

Pride & Predjudice - Jane Austen

"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like 'I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive . . .' And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming, 'Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.

1984 - George Orwell

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.

A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens

These are in no particular order, we think they are all great openings. And if you have any other suggestions drop them below.

  1. “It was the afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me.”

has to be the best opening line of all times. Written by Anthony Burgess in Earthly Powers.

  2. Great Top 10 Tuesday! This isn't an amazing first line, but it's the first line in my favourite book - " July had been blown out like a candle by a biting wind that ushered in a leaden August sky", My Family and other animals by Gerald Durrell.

  3. 'When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.'
