New eBay campaign

Let's start the week with some damn fine ads for eBay from GS&P from across the pond.

A great idea to juxtapose song lyrics with various items for sale on eBay is supported by a cracking piece of craft and a fantastic use of music.

I've included my favourite three ads here but all five launch executions are top notch and contain lots of nice little touches that reward repeat viewing. I'm sure there's plenty more where that came from - this campaign has the potential to run and run and run.

In a world full of pompous and pretentious, manifesto me-too 'purpose' propaganda it's also a breath of fresh air to see something so stripped back and powerful that just wants to entertain people rather than change the world.

On the face of it, a brief to highlight the overwhelming breadth and diversity of the eBay offering isn't the most interesting and exciting but the agency have managed to knock it out of the park with these commercials.

By reminding people that eBay is a treasure trove for the random and the rare, this campaign should hopefully give people the stimulus to go back and have a rummage around for something they might want to buy.

Second-hand hats off to everyone involved.

  1. eBay missed a big opportunity to engage with potential customers through these awesome ads by disabling comments on their Youtube videos. Digital Faux pas! Sad :(

    1. The best engagement they get, is the sort of engagement here: people watching the ads and sharing the link. Fuck the comments.

  2. Well Parvez, the purpose of digital platforms is to have a social conversation & not a one way monologue (like TV). Disabling a key conversational aspect of a platform is scuttling potential scale of consumer engagement. Sharing a video is just one small aspect of it (likes, comments/feedback, watch time, audience retention, consumption by device, consumption by demo, replays & more help the uploader get useful signals to tweak this content & make it better over time). Going just by video views - its an average of 7-8k views across their 3 videos & single digit likes. In this day & age - user generated videos get much much more engagement. Great content. poor promotion. disappointed :( (Btw Parvez, the fact that my comment got your comment - see we're having a dialogue on a random blog. No offense sell sell :) - How interesting is that, compared to just sharing this blog link & not sparking conversations?)

    2. I'm afraid I'm not in the "Social conversations on digital platform" business. I'm in advertising.
