Bill Bernbach Said #71

Number 71, and the penultimate quote in our Bernbach series...

“If you stand for something, you will always find some people for you and some against you. If you stand for nothing, you will find nobody against you, and nobody for you.”

  1. Wow! I never thought I would live to see the last of Bill Bernbach quotes.

I started following the sell sell blog while working as a copywriter at a small agency. By that time I felt I was the only one at work supporting Bernbach's way of thinking. I believe my bosses barely knew who he was.

Back then (it's been what? 3, 4 years reading you guys!) I wanted to make a huge poster and plaster Bernbach's quotes all over the office. Just to see if I could get someone onboard.

But I grew tired of the bosses before that happened. They grew fucking tired of me too. And mad. So I packed my stuff, moved to the city I was born and started my own agency.

I wrote down our principles when we opened. Nothing fancy, just a word file with a few lines inspired by Bernbach's quotes, the Sell Sell Blog, Dave Trott, Bob Hoffman and a few others.

This is a really small place. No advertising meca, for sure. No big brands or huge budgets. But I'm happy because I get to do advertising the way I believe it's right.

I'm gonna keep my promise. When you post the last quote, I'll make a huge poster for the agency wall. My agency now. Just to see how many people I can get onboard.

Thanks guys, you've been an inspiration.

PS: I'm on quote #71. I think you may have repeated a couple of numbers.

  2. Hello Fede, thanks for your great comment, and for following the blog for all these years. We're really happy for you that that you're also getting to do advertising the way you believe is right at your own place - congratulations. Please send a picture of the poster when it's completed, we'd love to see it. As for the numbers, I'll take your word for that. And stay tuned.

  3. Perhaps my favourite one so far.
